Skeet champions decided at Commissioners' Cup youth competition

Nearly 140 young target shooters from across Arizona competed at the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Commissioner's Cup state skeet championships on April 7 at the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club.

Squads finishing first were:

Varsity division (grades 9 to 12)
Red Mountain Target Terminators Varsity Team #2 (scored 277 out of 300 targets): Patrick Wood, Scottsdale; Kyle Wandelear, Queen Creek; Kaitlyn Borie, Phoenix.

Junior varsity division (grades 9 to 12)
Huachuca Hot Shots (scored 290 out of 300 targets): Brielle Eaton, Sierra Vista; Brisden Eaton, Sierra Vista; Scott Usry, Hereford.

Intermediate division (grades 6 to 8)
Red Mountain Target Terminators (scored 285 out of 300 targets): Wesley Borie, Phoenix; Ryan Bollinger, Phoenix; Kyle Johnson, Phoenix.

Rookie division (grades 5 and under)
Ben Avery Clay Crushers (scored 170 out of 300 targets): Casey Coleman, Goodyear; Dylan Karvanek, Anthem; Paysem Unger, Phoenix.

“There were some great scores out here,” said Ashley Lynch, shooting sports coordinator for the Arizona Game and Fish Department. “Two of the shooters, Brisden Eaton of the Huachuca Hot Shots junior varsity squad and Kimberly Peters of the Ben Avery Clay Crushers varsity squad, hit 99 out of 100 targets."

Young shooters came from several different parts of the state, including metro Phoenix, Tucson, Sierra Vista, Apache County, Buckeye, Casa Grande and Yuma. Winning teams are eligible to compete at the national SCTP skeet championships held July 13-15 at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio.

The skeet championships were the second leg of the Arizona Commissioners' Cup championships. Sporting clays championships were held at the Ben Avery Clay Target Center in Phoenix on March 31, and the trap championships will be held April 28 at the Red Mountain Trap and Skeet Club in Scottsdale.

SCTP is a youth development program that teaches trap, skeet and sporting clays to students in grades 12 and under. Arizona’s program is sponsored by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission and administered by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, in partnership with the National Shooting Sports Foundation. More than 600 kids compete in Arizona’s SCTP. Nationally, about 10,000 youngsters compete in 40 states.
